Product Description

The Norma Oryx bullet, introduced in 1996, has become a renowned hunting bullet praised globally for its exceptional performance. It combines rapid expansion for effective impact, extremely high residual weight, and deep penetration, making it highly effective even on large game.

The Oryx is a bonded bullet, meaning its jacket and core are fused together. Upon impact, it expands quickly, but the bonding prevents separation of the jacket and core, resulting in residual weights of up to 99%. This design greatly contributes to the bullet's deep, straight penetration and the massive mushrooming for which it is well-known.

The tip of the Oryx features internal cleavage zones, and a special technique leaves the outer part of the tip unbonded. These unique details differentiate the Oryx from other bonded bullets, providing a wide range of uses under diverse hunting conditions.

FEATURES

  • Bonded classic since 1996
  • Up to 99% retained weight
  • An excellent all-round bullet for all types of hunting
  • Massive mushrooming
  • Offered in a wide variety of calibres

ALL-ROUND BULLET
For over 25 years, the Oryx has proven to be an exceptionally good all-round bullet. With its controlled expansion and high residual weight, it is suitable for all types of hunting and is available in Norma's widest range of calibres.

PART OF THE NORMA SILENCER SERIES
As the use of silencers increases in popularity, more short barrels are appearing on the market. However, many hunters are unaware that a shorter barrel can significantly reduce the effectiveness and precision of the ammunition used.

Standard rifle ammunition is typically optimised for barrel lengths of 60 cm, while many modern barrels measure around 50 cm. This length difference can prevent the propellant from fully burning before the bullet leaves the muzzle, potentially shortening the lifespan of the silencer and reducing the ammunition's overall effectiveness.

The Oryx is the first bullet to be included in this new, optimised series of hunting bullets.

THE .375 H&H CARTRIDGE

When Holland & Holland designed this cartridge in 1912, a bullet diameter of .375" was considered a light medium bore. However, due to its relatively moderate recoil and modern bullet design, it quickly became the most popular all-round cartridge for African hunting and has maintained this status ever since. Due to the cartridge's narrow shoulder, the designers incorporated a belt just behind the rim. Accordingly, the cartridge was originally given the impressive title: “Holland & Holland’s .375 Belted Rimless Magnum Express.”

The .375 was designed for use in a magnum length action, but as these were scarce before World War II, many English gunmakers removed metal in front of the lower locking-lug to sufficiently enlarge the magazine of standard-length Mauser actions. As both options were costly, the case was soon used as a basis for a number of wildcats and commercial “short magnum” cartridges.

By modern standards, the .375 H&H could be considered a .30-06 using a 9.5mm bullet, which is a fair designation. With pointed bullets, the .375 has a sufficiently flat trajectory for use on most species, although it is unnecessarily powerful for anything but the largest deer and bears in North America. It is also quite popular for moose hunting in Scandinavia, but it is in Africa, with its wide variety of antelopes and other game species, that one can truly utilise the full potential of this great cartridge. While often used for hunting buffalo and elephant with appropriate bullets, it may not be considered the optimal choice for these specific purposes.
