Wooden gunstocks are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb water and are constantly exposed to environmental factors like wind, weather, and temperature fluctuations during outdoor use. To achieve the best results with Schaftol, follow these steps:

1. Sand the stock with approximately 240-280 grit sandpaper.
2. Apply a generous amount of oil using the included application sponge. Alternatively, you can dip the stock.
3. Allow the oil to soak in at room temperature for about 5 days.
4. Lightly sand the stock again, this time with 400 grit sandpaper. Remove a small amount of wood. This sanding step helps to smooth any wood fibres that may have risen due to the initial oiling.
5. Re-oil the stock. It will now absorb less oil.
6. Allow the oil to soak in at room temperature for approximately 3-5 days.
7. Perform an intermediate sanding with very fine sandpaper (1000-1500 grit). The finer you sand, the higher the final gloss will be.
8. The final oil application should be worked in with a soft cotton cloth. Rub and press the oil into the pores.
9. Repeat the oil application (point 8) with a cloth until the desired finish is achieved.

When treating a raw wooden stock with Scherell's Schaftol for the first time, it is recommended to gently heat the oil to 30 to 50 degrees Celsius beforehand. This helps the oil penetrate deeper into the stock. To do this, transfer the required amount to a separate container and heat it in a water bath. The original bottle with the application sponge is not suitable for heating.

Tip: Always take the time to polish and work the oil in by hand. Polishing machines can be too rough and imprecise, potentially damaging the stock and preventing optimal results.
