Product Description

Scherell's Schaftol Stock Oil provides essential care for your hunting and sporting rifle stocks. Wooden stocks are naturally hygroscopic, meaning they absorb water and are constantly exposed to the elements and temperature fluctuations during outdoor use. This exposure can make the stock susceptible to moisture penetration, potentially leading to warping or cracking as it dries. Such damage can affect accuracy and the overall performance of your firearm.

Regular maintenance with a high-quality rifle stock oil is crucial. Scherell's Schaftol is a specialist stock oil, crafted from the finest natural products, designed to offer superior preservation for your rifle stock. It effectively protects against various weather conditions, preventing roughening and staining, while enhancing the natural grain and beauty of the wood. With consistent treatment, your stock will develop a richer, darker, and more appealing finish.

Schaftol Range Overview

Scherell's Schaftol is available in several formulations to suit different wood types and desired finishes:

Type Application
Gold To emphasise the grain of light stocks and achieve a golden-yellow finish.
Light For light stocks that should not darken.
Red-brown For stocks with a reddish-brown colour.
Dark Specifically formulated for walnut stocks, providing a rich, deep finish.
Extra-dark For especially dark stocks, also highly suitable for re-dyeing stocks during repairs.
Scherell's Schaftol Instructions for Use

Over half of all hunting rifles feature an oiled stock, which typically receives a pre-treatment during manufacture. However, this initial treatment does not offer permanent protection. For lasting care and optimal results, follow these steps:

  1. Sand the stock with approximately 240-280 grit sandpaper.
  2. Apply a liberal amount of oil using the included application sponge. Alternatively, you can dip the stock.
  3. Allow the oil to soak in at room temperature for about 5 days.
  4. Lightly sand the stock again, this time with 400 grit sandpaper. Remove a small amount of wood to smooth out any wood fibres that have risen due to the oiling.
  5. Re-oil the stock. It will now absorb less oil.
  6. Allow the oil to soak in at room temperature for approximately 3-5 days.
  7. Perform intermediate sanding with very fine sandpaper (1000-1500 grit). Finer sanding will result in a higher gloss finish.
  8. The last oil application should be supported with a soft cotton cloth. Rub and press the oil into the pores of the wood.
  9. Repeat the oil application (point 8) with a cloth until the desired finish is achieved.

Important Tip: When treating a raw wooden stock with Scherell's Schaftol for the first time, gently heat the oil to 30 to 50 degrees Celsius beforehand to ensure deeper penetration into the wood. Transfer the required amount to a separate container and heat it in a water bath; the original bottle with the application sponge is not suitable for heating.

Always take the time to polish and work the oil in by hand. Polishing machines can be too rough and imprecise, potentially damaging the stock and preventing optimal results.
